Supermarket development for Neston?

Postby Ed »

PLANS for a new supermarket in Neston have divided the town.
Councillors have agreed to go ahead with the sale of the car park land behind the Town Hall for a Sainsbury's store and town square.
However, some residents are unhappy with the proposal, with one describing the council decision to develop as a "foregone conclusion".
What do you think?

I think it's great, can't wait for them to get on with it, maybe it will stop Neston becoming a ghost Town

Its a pity that we where not given the chance of seeing the Booths option, looking at the architects proposal it looks quite nice

There has been work on the car park this week, taking core samples, could have told them its all sandstone bedrock, so it looks like things are moving along with the Sainsburys work although I'm not sure if the final plans have gone through yet, has anyone checked out what the Booths option was, I do wonder why we never had a option to go with them, more of a family business rather than the Big Brother Sainsburys.

Things have gone really quiet about the new supermarket, I wonder if Sainsburys have discovered that when they did their bore samples it's a sandstone bedrock, that could be a problem for them with regards an underground car park, time will tell.

Is it just my imagination or has the title of this post been changed slightly, where has the word divided gone??? is that editorial fixing it.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing the full plans in Neston next week, no doubt all the moaners will be there telling us all that what we need is lots of small shops, such as cloths, electrical ect, but it ain't going to happen, so where stuck with Sainsburys, pity about the Booths option, it looked a better design

So, we now have three conservative councillors for the Neston area for the future West Cheshire, now they Cons where against The Sainsburys store, I wonder if they will try to stop the development

Now thats the cat amongst the pigeons, they are doing an archaelogical dig on the car park back of Neston Town Hall and may have found a thousand year old settlement (I'm sures some of the locals actually go back that far LOL), this could have an effect on the proposed planning application, also I think the fact the the site is on a sandstone bedrock could mean the cost of the development may increase.

Public meeting Thursday 12th June ay Neston Civic Hall, time for everyone to have there say about the planning application, should be quite a stormy meeting, I'm away so will miss it, which is a pity, I don't think the council will get an easy ride over this now they don't really have a mandate since the Conservatives will be in charge on the new West Cheshire council next year

Couldn't get to the meeting last night but I believe things got pretty heated, the application has been passed so I have been informed, sounds like it was just rubber stamped and foregone conclussion. I am in some respects in favour of a development (although the Booths option looked better) but have concerns of the traffic flow through the Town, especially people using Gladstone Road and Raby Road/Tannery lane as a short cut, I don't think the potential problems have really been thought out. Interested to see how the meeting will be reported in the local press and stand by for some very angry letters pages. Did anyone go to the meeting reading this, I would be interested in unbiased views.

Sainsbury in Neston

Postby sonic »

This new Sainsbury`s that is about to be constructed in Neston, will be the downfall of the town, the whole area of the existing car parks, will be gone during construction, it will be a nightmare, the high street and surrounding roads will be bottlenecked, more people will go out of town to shop as they will not be able to park, the high street shops will suffer and some may never recover.
Also when work starts on the site to break up the sandstone bedrock, it is beleived that chemicals are to be used to break up the sandstone and these chemicals will pollute the water table under ground.
Once the construction is complete, there will be 30 extra car parking spaces, some 200 new jobs will be created and Saisbury say that thier employees will not be allowed to use the new car park, where will they park, they can`t all walk to work.
With regards to Neston residents that already shop out of town, they will continue to shop out of town, If they prefer: Tesco - Morrisons - Asda - Aldi Etc., they will not shop at Sainsbury, that`s a fact.
The new store will be a novelty at first, but in reality it just ain`t gonna work, It is said that it will bring more trade to the high street, I don`t think so, It may of worked in other towns but it won`t work in Neston.
Sainsbury`s prices are too expensive for the majority of Neston shoppers, they will have to drop their prices if they want any chance of survival
Somerfield is a very good store now with low prices and special offers and is a very busy store, they also offer a free home delivery service, which is very good, if you have not visited the store lately, take a look you will be very surprised at the offers they have, Watch out Sainsbury`s, your in for a big shock.
