Refuse removal

Postby Boyd »

The week prior to Christmas Wirral received a light dusting of snow. As a result the green bin collection scheduled for the 22nd December was not undertaken. The bins were also not emptied on the 23rd or 24th so residents went into Christmas with bins full to overflowing. Additionally some bright spark in the Council had decided that brown bins wouldn't be collected for some 6 weeks over the period, obviously on the basis that gardners stop for a rest in winter - wish they did. Today is 11 January and the green bins have still not been emptied - somewhat more understandable due to the icy conditions, but not helpful to the householders. Although rare species as binmen and postmen have disappeared since New Year - doubtless due to the danger on our streets - I've noted that shopkeepers large and small alike have been open every possible day to try and earn a living, and well done to them.
North West Tonight has recently shown other councils actually doing something to try and provide a service to residents, but Wirral was conspicuous by its absence from the programme. So what exactly is WBC doing about the situation?
Doubtless my Council Tax payment will disappear from my bank account on the usual date this month, and doubtless Steve Maddox will receive his six figure salary this month and all his minions will be paid as well. I also expect the contractors employed by the Council to do the job they used to do will be paid.

So do any of them give a damn about the Council Tax payers?

In total agreement, fast to take council tax and increase but slow to deliver services in good or bad weather.

Our bins were due to be emptied on 24th Dec, didn't happen. Put the bin out on Dec 29th and it was emptied but most people hadn't left their bins out not knowing what the plans were. The expression organsied chaos springs to mind.
Our road (Grange Mount) although a main 'feeder road' to Charing X remained ungritted until Saturday despite the Police informing me a week before they would get them (the council) to grit it after a spate of three accidents in as many days.
We move to the emptying of the rubbish every other week and despite being assured at the time this was adequate and the way forward even though a village idiot could tell it would not be.

Brown bins suspended for 6 weeks uh? You should be so lucky, It would be nice to have one! Despite no reduction in council tax our street isn't down for brown bin collections even though our two neighbouring roads including one I look at are! When I enquired/complained I was asked would I mind taking my bin across the road to be emptied (to one of the streets that has a collection), had I a bin I would, 5 months on I am still waiting for a call back from street scene, I am not holding my breath.

Not many things in life are certain except death, taxes and Wirral Council's failure to perform to an acceptable standard and it's ability to constantly vex it's residents!
