SummerTyne Americana Festival 2015

Posted on 15 July 2015

The tenth SummerTyne Americana Festival promises to be better than ever before with a weekend long party between 17 and 19 July, featuring the finest American roots music with a handful of legendary artists as well as the pick of the new crop of breakthrough acts. With concerts in and around Sage Gateshead, including the hugely popular free DFDS Seaways Jumpin’ Hot Stage, there’ll be plenty to entertain.

This year’s festival presents a strong seam of southern soul, blues and gospel alongside a sensational cast of country, rock and Americana stars. Headliners taking to the Sage One stage, supported by Hays Travel include country music royalty Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, GRAMMY award-winners Rosanne Cash and John Leventhal plus Anderson East and young British country act The Shires with Nashville songwriting ace Jace Everett.

In keeping with the Southern theme, gospel as well as soul music plays a big part of SummerTyne 2015 with appearances by standout female vocalists, Alabama-born Naomi Shelton and The Gospel Queens and Nashville’s legendary McCrary Sisters. The McCrary Sisters appear on a powerful blues/gospel bill with award-winning drummer Cedric Burnside and they also feature in a family concert ‘Oh Happy Day’.

Festival organisers are thrilled that the 2015 programme provides an incredibly rare opportunity to see, from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, legendary duo Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham perform songs from their remarkable back catalogue. Two of the most important songwriters to emerge from the deep South during the boom of 60’s soul music, they composed soul classics including ‘I’m Your Puppet’ and ‘Cry Like a Baby’.

The stellar bill also includes Super Furry Animals’ front man Gruff Rhys with his concept travelogue ‘American Interior’, a master-class in song writing and storytelling with film and live music, and not one but two sets of musical male siblings, Felice Brothers and Pierce Brothers.

And the good times get even better! Two hotly-tipped breakthrough artists who went down a storm at this year’s County to Country Festival (C2C) appear in a sensational double bill – Jess & The Bandits and British born Callaghan.

New for 2015 is the SummerTyne Late Lounge, presented in association with the Americana Music Association UK. The eclectic mix of artists includes singer-songwriter Ags Connolly, country trio Red Sky July and Newcastle’s own Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra, winners of Americana Band of the Year in the Spiral Earth and AMA-UK Awards 2015. Sunday night’s Late Lounge features the close harmony sounds of The Bevvy Sisters, Mississippi-born Lisa Mills singing the blues, gospel and Nashville country and Hannah Rickard & The Relatives and their stomping vintage R&B and blistering rock ‘n’ roll.

A highlight of SummerTyne Americana Festival is the free DFDS Seaways Jumpin’ Hot Stage with the stunning riverside setting providing a perfect backdrop for laid-back afternoons and a sizzling combo of country, blues and rock ‘n’ roll. This year the outdoor stage is kindly supported by DFDS Seaways.

Max Foster, Passenger Director at DFDS Seaways said: “Enjoying live music and having a good time are key elements of our cruise ferry service from Newcastle to Amsterdam, so we’re delighted to sponsor the Jumpin’ Hot outdoor stage this year. It’s important to us to be able to support local people and events and we hope the free stage will allow as many people as possible to revel in the festival atmosphere.”

The outdoor line-up includes the soulful sounds of James Hunter Six, country duo and sisters Ward Thomas, the raw musical excellence of Marty O’Reilly & The Old Soul Orchestra, rootsy blues from Moreland and Arbuckle, and Nashville’s feisty female combo Della Mae. Also entertaining the crowds outdoors will be Mush, The Lost Bros, Hallelujah Trails, Dom & The Iko’s, Lewis & Leigh, Hillfolk Noir, Suzette Lawrence and The Neon Angels, John Lewis Trio, Caroline Mary, El Cid, Michael Littlefield, Gilded Thieves, Miss Mary & The Mr Rights, Big Red & The Grinners and King Size Voodoo Traveller.

Free music continues inside too on the Concourse with appearances by established and emerging Americana artists including Red Sky July, Norrie McCulloch, Chloe Chadwick, JD & The Straight Shot, laid back folk-rock duo Zervas & Pepper and Sage Gateshead’s own Bradley Creswick and The RNS Allstars.

The American theme will continue off stage as Sage Gateshead’s hospitality partner Centerplate turns The Brasserie into the SummerTyne Saloon serving speciality Southern dishes including jerk chicken, blackened tilapia, barbeque ribs, and key lime pie tarts. A “SummerTyne Special menu” will be available at the Sir Michael Straker Café, offering clam chowder and chargrilled chicken, and a jambalaya stand will serve up the Southern favourite inside the venue. Outside restaurateurs will embrace the Southern atmosphere including Longhorns Barbeque Smokehouse, Stateside Treat Emporium, The Pizza Guy, North Street Feast and a Frank’s hot dog stand. In a new green initiative, guests will be served their Heineken or Real Ale “Wylam“ in a reusable branded souvenir cup.

There is much more to keep festival goers entertained in and around Sage Gateshead with musical river cruises, a poster exhibition, films and talks and fun family activities. Those who can’t resist a spot of shopping will be pleased to learn that as well as Sage Shop there will be a few specialist retailers on site including Daisy Kiss Boutique, Flip and Blinkin’ Imp and of course you can pick up CDs and merchandise for artists performing at SummerTyne.
